Notes

From Walter's notes. He calls GWC Hattstaedt "our papa." GWC Hattstaedt arrived in the United States (recruited by Loehe as a Lutheran minister) in 1844, according to TMPTT. But according to Theodore Graebner, Lutheran Pioneers II, GW Hattstaedt was working in Monroe, Michigan, in 1843 (p. 9). [This is incorrect.} Zehnder, p. 18: he left Bremen on June 18, 1844. Frau Pastor Hattstaedt was buried in Monroe, Michigan--Concordia College mentioned in article. BIRTH-DEATH: Lutheran Cyclopedia p. 447. IMMIG: Lutheran Cyclopedia, p. 447, uses 1844. Result of second marriage was one son (thus, Julia wrong). Which son? SOURCE: Autobiography and a Short History of the Hattstaedt Family; by G.W.C. Hattstaedt and Otto F. Hattstaedt; 33 p.; 1961; Allentown County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiania, has an original copy. GWC Hattstaedt was apprenticed as a brassmaker in Fuerth. He did well, but began to associate with Christian brethren, and responded to two pastors recruiting people to serve the church in America. He received initial instruction and in 1841 was sent to the missionary seminary in Dresden, where he spent two years. He received training in practical theology from Loehe for another half year and was sent to America in April 1844. In August 1844 he became pastor of Trinity Lutheran Congregation in Monroe, MI. Ordained and inducted into his office by pastors Schmid and Cronenwett.
